Of Elephants and Whales

The following comparison just struck me:
As whales are to Herman Melville in Moby Dick
SO
Elephants are to Walt Disney in Dumbo.
Do I believe this?

Don't know, haven't thought it through. But it's the kind of interpretive idea worth thinking about.

The crazyass thing about this comparison is, of course, the juxtaposition of Dumbo, a cartoon, with Moby Dick, a certified gold star American novel. Well, having already argued that Fantasia is one of the great works of the 20th Century, I suppose I can handle this judgment as well.
